Advice from Epworth’s Dr Sheridan Smith
Dr Sheridan Smith received her accolade from the University of Hull, and thanked staff and graduates on social media site Twitter, saying that she had spent a “special day with my family”.
She joked: “The most hysterical thing about getting a doctorate today is that all my mates will now be forced to call me doctor.”

Dr Smith congratulated all the graduates on achieving their degrees before urging them to soak up the opportunities life throws at them and ‘get out there and grab life with both hands’.
She acted at Hull New Theatre as a child and enjoyed a long association with the Northern Theatre Company before she left the north to pursue her acting career in London. She received her award in the first of the University’s summer degree ceremonies in a packed Hull City Hall alongside graduates from the Faculties of Art and Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering.
After the ceremony, the multiple award-winning actress said: “I’m thrilled to be an honorary graduate of the University of Hull. I’m very excited to stand amongst those who I believe will make a difference in the future. It’s truly an honour and I’m very grateful to have been recognised in this way.”
